Black Coffee’s Gala Raises R3.1m for Music Academy

Renowned deejay and producer Black Coffee celebrated his 49th birthday in style, hosting an exclusive fundraising gala at LUXX Venue in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The event, organised by the Black Coffee Foundation, successfully raised R3.1 million on Friday, 14 March, to help establish the Black Coffee Music Academy, a world-class institution aimed at nurturing young musical talent.
Influential figures from politics, business and entertainment — including Fikile Mbalula, Somizi Mhlongo, Anatii, Major League DJz, and Dr Tamaryn Green — attended the glamorous black-tie affair.
The highlight of the evening was a live auction led by Strauss & Co, featuring unique items such as a Nelson Makamo artwork and a limited-edition Rolex, both fetching substantial bids in the hundred of thousands.
Speaking at the event, Black Coffee shared what the academy meant to him, stating: “This initiative has been a dream of mine for a long time, and it’s truly incredible to see it finally come to life — starting with this very special evening, surrounded by people who believe in the power of music education.”
The initiative aims to provide tertiary-level music education, covering production, business, and industry knowledge, ensuring African musicians are equipped to succeed on the global stage.
